Following up on our discussions of blobs in 40K, a natural
question is can Tyranids get in on the action despite not being able to take
allies? We can try, but the problem is Tyranids are unique in that we don’t
want to pay points for our troops- better to generate them, but the troops are
out only access to a blob, and we need enough of a mass of them. So, we are
going to go with that, and here is my first stab at a list- what do you think?

Hive Tyrant (1) - Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms,
Twin-Linked Devourer - Brainleech Worms, AG, Wings, Paroxysm, Leech Essence =

The goal is to shut down the center of the table- all of it mid
field by flooding it with gaunts. Of course this assumes one has access to
those insane numbers in the first place!
We want 120 of them in big blocks of 30 plus two tervigons to
not only spawn more, but act as a synapse anchor point. The tervigons are
troops and if they spawn small broods both them and the broods will take
mission objectives on our side of the table and deployment zone.
Maybe the flood will take any mid field objectives, but at least
they are going to contest them and prevent our opponent from getting past.
The second element in the list is the flying harpies and tyrants-
I’m not in love with harpies, but they are the best we can do- all five of them
fly OVER the gaunt blobs and engage any units that can kill the blob/flood
first, then focus on any units that can go over the blob, and finally if they
are still up, any scoring units on our opponent’s side of the table.
I have played a non flying version of this. It works well a locking up the center of the table but if the opponent is smart they eventually go for the tervigons to clean out the gaunts with a multiplier. The flying pat may eliminate that issue, yet another list idead to try.
ReplyDeleteAnd was hasn't GW released the @$@$@@$ harpy kit.
Also the Tervigons need toxin sacs to make the gaunts dangerous to attackers.
Hi Fritz,
ReplyDeleteI love tyranids, and I've got a whole bunch of tyranid stuff in a shoebox just waiting for some attention and some TLC before it's ready for the tabletop.
One of the problems I've been having with them is just that everyone always insists that the only good way to play Tyranids is the 'gant horde / swarm style where you just flood the board with bodies and overwhelm the enemy with sheer numbers.
This sort of game just... doesn't do anything for me. I'd like to do something more elite, with small powerful units that I can put a lot more effort into painting and making pretty. But every time I propose this sort of approach, I pretty much just get laughed at.
Is the 'elite' style Nid force viable in this edition, or should I just accept that I'm going to need 5 boxes of 'gants?
I don't think the Tyrants need AG, Toxin sacs seem to be a little better.
